Writing from the table: what we pour, what we cook, what we inherit, and who we become when we finally sit down.
Jennifer Ann Blair writes. Food, wine, a German Shepherd named Archie, and whatever the day brings.
Come in. Sit down. There’s wine open, and something’s in the pantry. Whatever you’re in the mood for, we’ll find it.
That’s the feeling of this place. No agenda, no dress code, no expertise required. Just good company, something worth eating or drinking, and the kind of conversation that doesn’t wrap up neatly because it isn’t supposed to.
I’ve been thinking about MFK Fisher lately, the way she’d have Julia Child, James Beard, Craig Claiborne, Ruth Reichl, a long list of merry chefs over, and they’d visit, cook something, drink, wander outside, sit, and talk until the light changed. Nobody was performing. Nobody was teaching. They were just people who loved food and wine and each other’s company, and that was enough.
That’s what I’m after here.
What this is
Writing about the table: what we pour, what we cook, what we inherit, and who we become when we finally sit down. Essays about living, with food and wine as the honest way in. California wine history that goes back further than most people think to look. Recipes that show up when the season calls for them, with the stories still attached.
Not a course. Not a brand. Just someone paying attention and writing it down.
Where to start
If you want to know what the writing sounds like, wander into the archive. The 257 Years series, tracing California wine from the Mission grape forward, is the longest thread. The recipe essays are shorter and arrive with something attached: a story, a season, a person who cooked this before I did.
If you want to know who I am, the About page has the longer version. The short version: I spent a long time in advertising telling other people’s stories, which was interesting until it wasn’t. Now I live in the desert with a German Shepherd named Archie who has opinions about everything and no concept of personal space.
What’s coming
More essays. More wine history. Recipes when the season calls for them. A reading series launching July 2026, first book: Consider the Oyster by MFK Fisher. Paid subscribers get the drinks too. Wine pairings, cocktails, and mocktails with the stories behind them, plus the discussion and dedicated chat.
How it works
The writing is always free. Recipes are always free. Drinks show up free occasionally when they’re in service of the story.
The full drinks content, reading series, and dedicated chat are for paid subscribers. $8 a month or $60 a year.
Pull up a chair. There’s always room.
